RAUNER’S BUDGET PLAN: SAME OLD SCAM

Governor uses state financial plan to hurt low-income, working and middle-class Illinois families; attacks collective bargaining; signals higher property taxes

SPRINGFIELD, Illinois – In response to Bruce Rauner’s budget presentation today, IDCCA President Doug House issued the following statement:

“The best news to take from Bruce Rauner’s budget speech today is that it is very likely his last. His plan is more of the same, and ultimately very simple: cut state government duties and put the costs on working and middle-class families.

Digging into his plan, he is gutting school funding by forcing towns and cities throughout the state to cover the state’s duty to provide teachers a dignified retirement. He is taking hundreds of millions of dollars directly out of the pockets of workers for health care. He’s leaving afterschool programs unfunded and senior citizens with few options for needed support.

That kind of thinking is typical of an out-of-touch hedge fund gambler. Republicans throughout Illinois have a lot of explaining to do for their constituents who are prison workers, teachers, and small business owners who rely on the stability of a university town economy. Because, let’s be honest, it is doubtful that many Democrats are willing to carry the insensitive torch for Bruce Rauner.”
